Official Sports Report: November 10, 2009 Riley and Players Surprise Fans in Ticket Lines
by Brian Brooks, Managing Editor CORVALLIS, Ore. – It's nice to have a winning football team, something longtime followers of the Beavers who waited out the lean years prior to 2000 would certainly tell you.
But it's the icing on the cake when you can really take pride in the guys under the pads and the men strolling the sidelines.
Early yesterday morning at around 7:15 a.m., head coach Mike Riley, Keaton Kristick and James and Jacquizz Rodgers showed up at the Reser Stadium ticket office to offer donuts and thanks to surprised students – many of whom had braved the elements camping overnight to purchase tickets for the Dad's Weekend game against Washington.
Even though 7:15 a.m. is practically the middle of the night by Beaver OSR standards, and despite returning from the Bay Area hours earlier, OSR photog Brock Ameele scraped the sleep out of his eyes and headed to Reser when we caught wind of the visit:
Big smiles could be found on both sides of the donut boxes as the coach and his men made their way through the line and told the faithful their loyalty was not unrecognized or unappreciated.
Win or lose, there's something you can be proud of, Beaver Nation.
Student tickets still remain for the Dad's Weekend and home season finale with the Huskies this Saturday at 12:30 p.m. The free tickets are available at Gate H in the south end zone between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. all week; students merely need to show their OSU student ID...
A RECORD IN THE MAKING OSU is bowl eligible and if they do indeed secure a bowl bid in 2009 for the fourth consecutive year, it would be a school record.
AT ODDS WITH THE POLLS We know it's been a wild year in college football this year – in the Pac-10 particularly, but you still have to scratch your head at Oregon State's recent (lack of) placement in this week's AP and USA Today coaches' poll.
Currently ranked No. 23 in the BCS standings, OSU is behind Stanford in both polls. The Beavers top the list of Also Receiving Votes teams in the AP Poll, 12 votes behind No. 25 Stanford, and they place No. 28 in the coaches' poll, also behind No. 27 Stanford.
Apparently the Cardinal's win over Oregon this weekend was impressive enough to erase the short-term memory of poll voters who don't follow the Pac-10 very closely.
The two polls are a little hard to swallow when you, 1) consider OSU beat the Cardinal heads-up 38-28 a few weeks ago, and 2) examine the ways each team got to their current 6-3 record:
Using the BCS rankings as our barometer, Oregon State's three losses this year have come to BCS No. 5 Cincinnati, No. 9 USC and No. 17 Arizona, three teams with a combined record of 22-4.
Stanford's losses this year have come at the hands of unranked Wake Forest (4-6, 2-4), No. 17 Arizona and No. 23 Oregon State, representing a combined record of 16-11.
Believe it or not, the BCS computers actually have this one right – with OSU at No. 23 and Stanford off the list.
