Official Sports Report: August 11, 2009 RUNNNG MAN. |
Commentary Exclusive to Indiana OSR by Jeremy Gray BLOOMINGTON, IN - He's one of the most well-known players on the Indiana football team and he has never even played in a game. Some fans consider him the future of Indiana football. Members of the media have been impressed by his exploits in practices for over a year. He is one of the most celebrated recruits in recent Indiana football history. His name is Darius Willis and next month he will begin his college football career at Indiana.
He was the 2008 scout team offensive player of the year and he was named scout team player of the week on three occasions. In practice, he has shown that he has the balance, strength, and speed to compete in the Big Ten.
Now Willis gets to utilize his talents in a real game and with renewed emphasis on the running game this season, his arrival couldn't be more timely.
Bill Lynch installed the 'Pistol' offense to provide his team with a better opportunity to run 'downhill'. Bryan Payton and Darius Willis will be the running backs he leans on to execute this new offense. There is every reason to believe that Darius Willis is up to the challenge.
As a high school standout at Franklin Central, Willis was the 2007 runner-up for Indiana's Mr. Football award. He rushed for 1,728 yards (6.0 average) and 28 scores in his senior season and received attention from college recruiters from across the Midwest. Willis also excelled as a returner and pass catcher out of the backfield.
Both rivals.com and scout.com had Willis ranked among the top running back prospects in the country and he was considered the fourth best prospect out of the state of Indiana in the class of 2008.
Last year, Bill Lynch and his staff decided to redshirt Willis to allow him to mature and develop. Willis has utilized that time to add bulk and learn the offense. According to his coaches and fellow teammates, Willis is more than ready for his college debut.
Every year there are highly touted prospects who fade into college football anonymity. Every season there are also many unheralded gems that become dominating players destined for the NFL. But USC, Ohio State, and Florida are great every year because more often than not, highly regarded high school players do play well at the next level.
We'll find out about Darius Willis soon enough, but all signs point to him becoming a very special player at Indiana. |
